Child & Young Person CBT

Enabling the young person to talk about their feelings

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of therapy widely used in the treatment of a range of mental health issues including anxiety and depression, OCD issues, issues of self-esteem and where dealing with trauma. Though you do not need to have a mental health diagnosis to benefit from CBT.

Child & Young Person CBT is specifically designed to help and support youngsters today who seem to be under ever more pressure and where helping to learn coping strategies now can help them for a lifetime.

CBT helps by focusing on the relationship between the way we think (our cognitions) and feel and on what we do (our behaviours). Looking at how we are in the present time and the vicious cycles that people can feel trapped in. By understanding these first CBT can then introduce strategies and alternative ways of coping, to help you learn new responses and in turn break some of those cycles and find more peace and happiness. Whilst CBT helps you focus on the here and now, once the strategies are developed they will remain of support in new situations or difficulties an individual may face in their future.

People also see CBT Therapists to help develop techniques just to cope with and manage life and change better, to feel more in control, and to reduce their stress levels.

CBT usually involves attending weekly, 50 minute therapy sessions for a time limited period. It is a collaborative approach, with the individual guiding the therapy based on their own goals and an agreed agenda.

Lauren describes her work

“I provide children and young people with a safe space to explore and understand their difficulties.”

“Not knowing what to expect from talking therapy can understandably feel overwhelming for both young people and their parents and carers. Working within a Cognitive Behavioural framework provides the opportunity to explore difficulties and develop alternative strategies to improve mental health and wellbeing. I have worked with children and young people struggling with a variety of mental health issues, including anxiety, low mood, self-esteem issues and trauma and always tailor my therapeutic work around the individuals needs to fully engage them in the process. This in turn provides support that is both relevant and helpful in a timely and accessible way”

What Young People Say:

“I appreciate all the time and effort Lauren put in with me, and how much she taught me. Everything I’ve learnt about myself with her has completely changed my life. Now I can’t wait for the future!” Miss G, aged 15.

Childrens Mental Health Today

According to the Mental Health Foundation mental health problems affect about 1 in 10 children and young people today. They include depression, anxiety and conduct disorder, and are often a direct response to what is happening in their lives.

Alarmingly, however, 70% of children and young people who experience a mental health problem have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age.

The emotional wellbeing of children is just as important as their physical health. Good mental health allows children and young people to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and grow into well-rounded, healthy adults.
