For anyone that has ever practised yoga, the benefits are clear. There have even been scientific studies that prove yoga helps with flexibility, mindfulness and relaxation.

The benefits can vary from person to person but those are the main three that are associated with the practice. The medical perks to yoga have long been claimed but it seems that the true scale of yoga’s possibilities stretches well beyond this.

Yoga benefits for cancer patients

A new study has revealed that yoga offers medical benefits to cancer patients. The results of the study have led to calls being made for yoga to be prescribed to those struggling with pain and fatigue.

Previous studies around yoga have shown that the practice promotes a lower level of cortisol. Cortisol is commonly called the “stress hormone” and is a hormone that is linked to breast cancer. The medical possibilities of a lower level of cortisol are now being discovered and were shown in the recent study.

850 women with operable breast cancer were monitored whilst adding yoga to their fitness regimes. The findings of the study were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting. By the end of the study, fatigue scores were down 21 per cent in participants who practised yoga regularly as part of a wider workout schedule.

Those who practised yoga were also 61 per cent less likely to say that their pain had worsened, nearly 50 per cent less likely to have mood problems and 31 per cent less likely to feel as though their cancer interfered with their day to day activities.

These findings show just how powerful yoga is. Something as simple as half an hour of yoga a day can have effects that are unmatchable.
