Everyone deserves a treat, especially at Christmas, but with family and friends offering you chocolate left, right and centre, over-indulging is easily done. You might not feel like it, but you’ll do well to go any more than an hour without someone offering you a plunge in a Celebrations or Heroes tub.

Aside from the seemingly limitless amount of food, another hurdle on the path to your fitness goals will be finding the time. There is plenty that you’ll need to do and people you’ll need to see over the holidays, so it’s easy for your fitness regime to take a back seat.

However, with a little planning and some flexibility, you can maintain your program and feel your absolute best. Here are some ways of sticking to your fitness plan and staying fit through Christmas:

Make a plan

Before you know it, it’ll be Christmas day. To make sure you’re ready, write up a day-to-day fitness plan. The Christmas holidays have a tendency to merge into one long stretch, so get your routine down on paper. That way, when the bombardment of the festivities arrives, you at least have your fitness plan to stick to.

Embrace the season

Rather than stick to what you usually do, embrace the festive season and take part in some activities that are only possible in winter. Don’t underestimate how good winter activities such as ice skating, winter hikes and sledging are for your health.

Exercise in the mornings

For those that don’t already do so, this can be a difficult one. Set the alarm an hour earlier than usual and do your fitness routine while the others are tucked in bed. We’ve previously written about why morning exercise is better.

Opt for high-intensity workouts

With time at a premium through the festive season, opting for high-intensity workouts might be a wise move. Slow and steady workouts can be hard to fit in, so try pushing yourself harder put over a shorter amount of time instead.
