Next month marks National Diabetes Week as well as International Yoga Day. You might not think that there’s much to link the two, but new research has shown otherwise.

A study by a university has shown that blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes can improve after just ten days of practising yoga.

Yoga helps diabetes

Close to 1,300 people took part in the study. They were a mixture of type 2 diabetes sufferers and those at high risk of developing the condition. Blood sugar levels both before and after they practised yoga fell by an average of ten per cent.

Yoga can have an immediate impact on blood glucose levels but researchers suggest regular practice to show a long term improvement in the glycaemic control of people with diabetes.

The findings add to the list of benefits that yoga brings, some of which are beneficial to diabetes sufferers in other ways. According to the journal Diabetes Spectrum, stress plays a part in the onset and control of diabetes; yoga has been shown to be an effective remedy for stress.

Benefits of yoga:

  • Increased flexibility
  • Improved core strength
  • More energy
  • Calm state of mind

Diabetes Week takes place between 11th and 17th June while International Yoga Day is on 21st June. We have regular Hot Hatha Yoga classes available to book and keep your eyes peeled for any special events on Yoga Day itself.

Preventing diabetes

There are around 4 million people suffering from diabetes and there are an estimated 11.9 million people at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the UK because of their lifestyle.

Nutrition therapy is also important in preventing, managing and slowing the rate of diabetes development.

Fitness too is key to preventing diabetes from developing. Archway Health Hub has a range of classes available in evenings and weekends that are ideal for beginners. Our welcoming team instruct classes including Bootybarre, Pilates, yoga, hot hatha yoga and neurological Pilates.
