It’s important to remember that it’s impossible to remain motivated all of the time. You will hit times when you’ll want nothing more than to sit on the sofa with a bar of chocolate and binge a TV series. Even Olympians will have mornings where their hand hovers over the snooze button before thinking otherwise.

staying motivated tipsImproving your motivation is much about understanding what makes you want to quit. Is it time? No enjoyment? Not seeing the results you want? There are solutions to all of these.

Here are some ways you can keep yourself motivated to stay on track with your fitness routine:

Set yourself goals

There’s not much more motivating than having a goal to aim for. If you’re wanting to run a 10k, register your place on a run for three-six months’ time. This should give you plenty of time to prepare and you have extra incentive because you’ve already paid and committed.

If there aren’t any goals to stick to, it becomes easier to say ‘no’, and that odd cheat day quickly turns into a cheat week or month. It doesn’t have to be race-based, either. The goal might be to drop a dress size or to try a new fitness class every couple of months. Whatever it is, just make sure it is achievable.

Remember why you started your fitness routine

Our future self can often feel like an altogether different person to us. This can make losing weight a challenge because it feels like someone else will benefit from the hard work we’re putting in now. You’re the one who is going to benefit from the work, so whether it’s dropping a dress size, getting a six pack or running a marathon, these little challenges are the sacrifices you have to go through to reach your ultimate goal.

There’s a reason that you stepped into the gym or joined that fitness class so remember that reason when you start to feel motivation slipping.

Pick an exercise class that you enjoy

We all stick to the things we enjoy most. Whether it’s eating a specific type of food, going to a favourite bar or partaking in a lifelong hobby on the weekend. The reason that it sticks is that we find it enjoyable.

At Archway, we really do believe that there is a type of fitness out there for everyone. In the modern day, there is simply so much variety in the ways we can keep fit. So what’s stopping you from trying them?

If you don’t like running how about cycling? Or maybe you could try something different like a Nia class?
