It’s no surprise that dancers have some of the most toned and flexible bodies. This strength comes from the intense workouts during training and performances. Elements of this training have now been crafted into a fitness class that morphs all of the athleticism necessary into a full body workout.

The Bootybarre class takes elements from ballet, Pilates and yoga to create a fun and energetic workout that tones the whole body. Bootybarre was created by Tracey Mallett in 2009; since then it has spread to studios and health centres globally.

Barre workouts have proved popular with celebrities such as Madonna and Ryan Giggs, while the Bootybarre workouts are commonly used by Kim Kardashian and Millie Mackintosh.

What to expect

Each low impact class begins with a warm up and then targets the upper and lower body with a series of sequences. The carefully structured plan works to tone and define the entire body. Towards the end of the session, sequences will target the body’s core and a stretch-heavy cool down helps to promote improved flexibility and recovery in the muscles.

Sequences involve using a ballet barre and small equipment such as hand weights, resistance bands and sponge balls to effectively work each muscle group. There is no need for any dance, Pilates or yoga experience as it is fitness focused: sequences are made up of simple movements with no complicated choreography or footwork to think about.
