Summer is on the way and it won’t be long until we were strutting around in our bikinis and swim shorts. This is when the months of hard work and dedication through winter and spring finally come off.

Exercise for absOne of the most sought-after body parts is abs. For both men and women, a set of abs has been a fitness goal for a long time. None of the tips below will come as a surprise to you but they will indeed help you towards your goal and you should start to see results within months.

With the warm weather just around the corner, there’s no time to waste so let’s crack on.

1. Drink water

Water is important. Your body needs it to function and studies have shown that muscle cells grow faster when they’re well hydrated. Drink plenty of water to keep your metabolism high and ensure your body is working at optimum level through workouts. You should aim for three to four litres of water every day.

2. Ab specific exercise

Exercise should be split between ab specific and cardio. Your cardio should preferably be high-intensity interval training as it burns more fat, but anything is better than nothing. For your ab workout, include a minimum of one specific exercise that targets each area of your abs.

3. Burn the belly fat

For your abs to be visible, you have to start by getting rid of the layer of fat covering them. If you cut your calorie intake by around 500 calories per day, you will promote an environment for gradual fat loss. Quality protein needs to be in much of what you do intake and it helps in the development of lean muscle. In general, around 1 gram of protein per day for every kilogram of your body weight.

No matter how many hours you spend in the gym, if your nutrition isn’t good, your abs won’t show.

4. Make sure you get enough sleep

Yes, you read that right. You don’t need to stay up doing crunches 24/7 to get your abs. In fact, one of the most important elements in the process is getting enough rest.

Inadequate levels of sleep causes the body to release a stress hormone that disrupts your ability to burn fat. Over time, this leads to fat storage around your belly. Getting enough sleep means a faster metabolism and greater muscle gains. We’d always recommend getting at least eight hours of sleep a night.

5. Take up Pilates

Pilates gives you better muscular endurance in the core and therefore can help to make your abs stronger. The majority of Pilates exercise engages the core muscles and by adding Pilates to your fitness regime, it helps to build lean muscle mass and develop toned your abs.
